Since Sept. 19, 2009, HM the King has stayed at Siriraj Hospital for 22 days by Sat. Oct. 10. The number of people who went to Siriraj Hospital to sign their get-well wishing for His Majesty has reached nearly 500,000 names across the spectrum of social statuses and geographical areas. Some of Them came to pray in front of HM’s Portrait and at both the monuments of Prince Mahidol of Songkla, HM the King’s father and the Princess Mother.
Why are those, Thais, members of foreign communities in Thailand, foreign visitors, diplomatic corps and the royal guest, Prince Andrew of Britain, who carried the message of Queen Elizabeth II to HM the King paying so much attention and concern for the illness of HM the King?
I think no one can describe his or her feeling of great concern over HM’s health with thousands of words to cover all the feelings those people have in their hearts. HM’s benevolence towards the Thai people everywhere, no matter where they live and how much the terrain is rugged or deep into the rural areas, almost unreachable and very difficult to approach, is too large to measure by any standard. HM visited them all to help them to have a better living condition and to survive the harsh life.
I have received a forward mail from my daughter who works at Bangkok Bank in Bangkok containing some brief accounts of HM’s several visits to see with his own eyes how bad the living conditions of the people were since more than 50 years ago. I have selected the most touching accounts that may bring tears to the eyes of Thai people who read this blog and translated them into English. I hope some foreigners who happen to come across this blog and read the stories would understand more about why Thai people give so much love to their King.

Our Stake
Once, M.R. Kukrit Pramoj had asked His Mjesty that, “Have you ever felt tired and disheartened?” HM the King gave this reply, “In fact, it’s quite disheartening. Some matters are really disheartening but our stake is so high. The stake is our home, our country, which is the happiness of the Thai people all over the country.”

เรื่อง”ราษฎรยังอยู่ได้”
ปีพุทธศักราช 2513 เมื่อพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวมีพระราชประสงค์ที่จะเสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปเยี่ยมราษฎรในตำบลหนึ่งของอำเภอเมืองพัทลุง อันเป็นแหล่งที่ผู้ก่อการร้ายคอมมิวนิสต์ปฏิบัติการรุนแรงที่สุดในภาคใต้เวลานั้น ด้วยความห่วงใยอย่างยิ่งล้น ทางกระทรวงมหาดไทยได้กราบบังคมทูลขอให้ทรงรอให้สถานการณ์ดีขึ้นกว่าที่เป็นอยู่เสียก่อน แต่คำตอบที่ทางกระทรวงมหาดไทยได้รับก็คือ

The People Can Live There
In 1970, His Majesty expressed his wish to visit the people at a district in Pathalung Province, where the communist terrorists infiltrated and operated in the most ferocious manner in the far south. With so much concern about the safety of HM the King, the Ministry of Interior had recommended to HM the King to wait until the situation is better. The answer given to the Ministry was that “the people have been in the risk of their safety several folds more than the risk we face because they have to live there. If they can live there, why we would become so coward even to make a visit to see how bad or good condition they are in?

“ดอกไม้จากหัวใจ”
ที่นครพนม บนเส้นทางรับเสด็จตรงสามแยกชยางกูร-เรณูนคร บ่ายวันที่ 13 พ.ย. 2498 อาณัติ บุนนาค หัวหน้าส่วนช่างภาพประจำพระองค์ ได้บันทึกภาพในวินาทีสำคัญที่กลายเป็นภาพประวัติศาสตร์ภาพหนึ่งของประเทศ

วันนั้นหลังจากทรงบำเพ็ญพระราชกุศล ณ วัดพระธาตุพนมวรมหาวิหารเสร็จสิ้นในช่วงเช้าแล้ว ทั้ง 2 พระองค์ได้เสด็จฯโดยรถยนต์พระที่นั่งกลับไปประทับแรม ณ จวนผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดนครพนม ราษฎรที่รู้ข่าวก็พากันอุ้มลูก จูงหลานหอบกันมารับเสด็จที่ริมถนนอย่างเนืองแน่น ดังเช่นครอบครัวจันท์นิตย์ ที่ลูกหลานช่วยกันนำ แม่ตุ้ม จันท์นิตย์ วัย 102 ปี ไปรอรับเสด็จ ณ จุดรับเสด็จห่างจากบ้าน 700 เมตร โดยลูกหลานได้จัดหาดอกบัวสายสีชมพูให้แม่เฒ่าจำนวน 3 ดอก และพาออกไปรอที่แถวหน้าสุดเพื่อให้ใกล้ชิดเบื้องพระยุคลบาทที่สุดเปลวแดดร้อนแรงตั้งแต่เช้าจนสาย เที่ยงจนบ่าย แผดเผาจนดอกบัวสายในมือเหี่ยวโรย แต่หัวใจรักภักดีของหญิงชรายังเบิกบาน เมื่อเสด็จฯ มาถึงตรงหน้า แม่เฒ่าได้ยกดอกบัวสายโรยราสามดอกนั้นขึ้นจบเหนือศีรษะแสดงความจงรักภักดีอย่างสุดซึ้ง พระเจ้าแผ่นดินทรงโน้มพระองค์อย่างต่ำที่สุด จนพระพักตร์แนบชิดกับศีรษะของแม่เฒ่า ทรงแย้มพระสรวลอย่างเอ็นดู พระหัตถ์แตะมือกร้านคล้ำของเกษตรกรชรา ชาวอีสานอย่างอ่อนโยน

พระมหากรุณาธิคุณอันหาที่สุดมิได้นี้ อาจมีส่วนชุบชูชีวิตให้แม่เฒ่ายืนยาวขึ้นอีกด้วยความสุขต่อมาอีกถึงสามปีเต็ม ๆ แม่เฒ่าตุ้ม จันท์นิตย์ ราษฎรผู้โชคดีที่สุดคนหนึ่งในรัชกาลที่ 9 สิ้นอายุขัยอย่างสงบด้วยโรคชราเมื่ออายุได้ 105 ปี

Flowers from the Heart
In Nakorn Phanom on the route for HM the King’s convoy to pass a point known as Chayangkura- Renu Nakorn 3-way junction on Nov. 13, 1955 in the afternoon, Mr. Anat Bunnag, the division chief of HM the King private photographers had snapped a moment of truth picture that has become one of the country’s historic photographs.
A Photograph That Tells More Than a Million Words
After HM the King finished his merit-making rite at Wat Thatphanomvaramahaviharn in the morning, Their Majesties the King and Queen traveled by car to stay for a night at the Governor’s official residence. The local people who got the news gathered at the roadsides with their children in tow, creating a large crowd to watch Their Majesties. The Chandnit family members of Grandma Toom, at 102 years old, brought her to wait for the royal convoy to pass at a roadside spot about 700m from their home. The grandma’s children brought along a bunch of 3 pink lotus flowers for her to hold in her hands in reverence of Their Majesties and brought her to the front line as close as possible to watch her King and Queen.
It’s a hot day with the bright sunshine from the morning to early afternoon, making the lotus flowers in the hands of Grandma Toom wilted and drooping but her face was still fresh with happiness. When Their Majesties’ car stopped in front of her, the old woman lifted her hands with the 3 wilting lotus flowers in her palms above her head, as a sign of high respect and deep loyalty. His Majesty stepped out from the car and walked over to the old woman. HM the King bent down to her as low as possible, his face nearly touched the old woman’s face. His Majesty smiled, his expression of kindness radiated out, and reached out his hand to gently touch the coarse and aging hands of the old north-easterner. It’s a scene that needed no description and a picture that description was not necessary. No one knows what His Majesty whispered to the grandma. But she will never forget.
Likewise, His Majesty has never forgotten that old citizen he met on the roadside that day. Grandchildren of the old woman related, “After Their Majesties got back to Bangkok, the Royal Palace Bureau had sent Grandma Toom a picture of that moment of truth between His Majesty and herself together with a miniature plaster-molded image of her beloved King through the Office of Phra Thatphanom District for her keepsakes.”
The immeasurable royal kindness might have given the old grandma and extended age for another 3 years. Grandma Toom Chandnit, one of the most lucky citizens in the 9th Reign, passed away peacefully of her old age at 105 years.

เขาเดินมาเป็นวัน ๆ
“…มีอยู่ครั้งนึง ข้าพเจ้าอายุ 18 ปี ได้ตามเสด็จ…ตอนนั้นเป็นช่วงหลังพระราชพิธีบรมราชาภิเษก เสด็จฯ เยี่ยมราษฎรทุกจังหวัดและอำเภอใหญ่ ๆ ก็เสด็จฯ ประมาณ 9 โมงเช้า เสด็จออกทรงเยี่ยมราษฎรมาเรื่อย ๆ
ทีนี้ข้าพเจ้าก็รู้สึกว่า แหม นานเหลือเกิน ตอนนั้นยังไม่กางร่ม ตอนนั้นยังไม่ค่อยกลัวแดด ไม่ใส่หมวก ก็รู้สึกแดดเปรี้ยง หนังเท้านี้รู้สึกไหม้เชียว ก็เดินเข้าไปกระซิบท่านว่า พอหรือยัง ก็โดนกริ้ว
“นี่เห็นไหมราษฎรเขาเดินมาเป็นวัน ๆ เพื่อมาดูเราแม้แต่นิดเดียว แต่นี่เรายืนอยู่ไม่เท่าไรล่ะ ตอนนี้ทนไม่ไหวเสียแล้ว..”

They Walked for Days
“…There was a time, when I was 18 years old. I went along with His Majesty…. It was just after the Coronation Day. His Majesty wanted to visit the people in all provinces and large districts. Each visit started at 9am regularly every day. I had a feeling that it took so long a time. I had no umbrella at the time as I was not afraid of the sun and had no hat. The sun was quite strong to the point that my feet seemed to burn. I walked near His Majesty and whispered, “Is it enough?” His Majesty got angry and said, “Look, the people walked for days to see us just for a moment. We stand here just a short time and you couldn’t bear it already.”

“ต่อไปจะมีน้ำ”
บทความ “น้ำทิพย์สาดเป็นสายพรายพลิ้วทิวงาม ทั่วเขตคามชื่นธารา” เขียนโดย มนูญ มุกข์ประดิษฐ์ ตีพิมพ์ในหนังสือพิมพ์ไทยรัฐ ฉบับวันที่ 5 ธ.ค.2528 ได้เล่าให้ผู้อ่านชาวไทยได้ประจักษ์ถึงเรื่องอัศจรรย์ของ “ในหลวง” กับ”น้ำ” ที่เกิดขึ้นในคำวันหนึ่งของเดือน ก.พ.2528
ด้วยความทุกข์ที่เปี่ยมล้นใจอันเนื่องมาจากต้องเผชิญความแห้งแล้งอย่างหนัก หญิงชราคนนึ่งที่มาเข้าเฝ้าฯ รับเสด็จได้คลานเข้ามากอดพระบาทของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว กราบบังคมทูลด้วยน้ำตาอาบแก้ม ขอพระราชทานน้ำ
พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวมีพระราชดำรัสตอบว่า”ยายไม่ต้องห่วงแล้วนะ ต่อไปนี้จะมีน้เราเอาน้ำมาให้”
แล้วพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวก็ทรงพระดำเนินกลับไปยังรถพระที่นั่งซึ่งจอดห่างออกไปราว 5 เมตร ปรากฏว่าท่ามกลางอากาศที่ร้อนแล้ง จู่ ๆ ก็เกิดฝนตกลงมาเป็นครั้งแรกในรอบ 5 ปีทำให้
ผู้ตามเสด็จและราษฎรในที่นั้นถึงกับงุนงงไปตาม ๆ กัน
There Will Be Water Later On
In an article, “The Holy Water is Falling Down in Sparkling Streams of Cristal-Clear Rain Drops to Bring Wetness to Our Land All Over”, written by Manoon Mukpradith in the daily Thai Rath on Dec 5, 1985 to tell a story of a miracle happened during a late evening, one day in Feb. 1985. (The article’s title comes from a passage in the lyric of one of His Majesty’s hit songs, The Falling Rain.)
With a heart filled with lots of suffering from a serious drought, an old local woman, who had waited to see HM the King on a royal visit to a faraway village, crawled up close to His Majesty and embraced his feet. She said with tears falling down her cheeks to His Majesty, asking for royal help in bringing water to the village. His Majesty said, “Grandma, don’t worry. There will be water later on. I’ll bring water to you.”
His Majesty, then, walked back to the royal car, parked about 5 metres away. Suddenly, the extremely dry and hot air changed to a downpour for the first time in 5 years. The rain surprised all officers in His Majesty’s convoy and the local villagers. It’s like a miracle to all of them.

It is a very good new at yesterday evening (Tue Oct. 13) when the 24st announcement by the Royal Palace Bureau in all TV channels informed the Thai people that HM the King’s health has improved significantly as His Majesty does not need physical therapy on his chest anymore as his lung improves to normal condition. I think the news has increased the level of relief in the mind of the Thai people all over the country.
I regularly watch ASTV channel, which reports for at least two times a day. The report gives the number of people coming to Siriraj Hospital each day and contains interviews of the people who come to sign the get-well wishing books for His Majesty.
The people being interviewed are from all communities in Bangkok and the provinces. They are school students, college students, movies stars and singers from all music producer camps, government officials, soldiers, foreigners, workers and corporate staffs. Both young and old people are almost the same in number. Most young people give their answers to the interviewer in the same way with a lively mood that they came to express the loyalty and love for His Majesty and want a quick recovery for him.
The old people have more emotional impact on their feeling on the illness of His Majesty. Their level of worries was very high. They mostly spoke in trembling voices and some of them started to cry as they said about their love for His Majesty and their wishes for the quick recovery and longevity of their beloved King. Many of the old people made their wishes for their King to live as long as possible for hundreds of years.
I am impressed with some Thai-born members of the Sikh community in Bangkok, who came in groups and expressed their feeling for His Majesty in the same way as other local Thai people.
A few days ago, the Bhutanese Ambassador, who took his diplomatic duty in Bangkok for only 4 months, came to sign the get-well book and present the bouquet of flowers from the King of Bhutan, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the young king who is quite popular among Thai people while he was in Bangkok several times during the past few years. He was crowned in early Nov. last year and now the world’s youngest monarch and head of state at 29 years old. Bhutan is a tiny and remote Himalayan country that changed its government system from absolute monarchy to democratic system late last year amidst the protest of some Bhutanese people, who felt that there was nothing wrong with the old system while their level of happiness was very high. Surprisingly, Bhutan is the first country to use the Gross National Happiness as an index for the country’s level of progress. Bhutan presently is one of the popular tourist destinations among Thai well-off people. Bhutan does not aim its development towards industrialization.
No wonder, the country is one of a very few countries in the world that are still underdeveloped but remains so green and pollution-free, presumably, a paradise on earth or a Shangri La.
Well, let’s get back to the topic of this blog and continue from what we have left off in the first part.

การเสด็จพระราชดำเนินทุกครั้ง แม้จะต้องเผชิญกับแดดร้อนหรือลมแรง ราษฎรก็ไม่เคยย่อท้อที่จะอดทนรอรับเสด็จให้ถึงที่สุด แม้ฝนจะตกหนักแค่ไหนก็ไม่มีใครยอมกลับบ้าน ร้อยเอกศรีรัตน์ หริรักษ์ เล่าไว้ในบทความ “พระบารมีปกเกล้าฯ ที่อำเภอท่ายาง” ตีพิมพ์ในหนังสือ “72 พรรษาราชาธิราชเจ้านักรัฐศาสตร์” ว่า ครั้งหนึ่งที่โครงการห้วยสัตว์ใหญ่ เมื่อเฮลิคอปเตอร์พระที่นั่งมาถึง ปรากฏว่าฝนตกลงมาอย่างหนัก ราษฎรและข้าราชการที่มาเข้าแถวรอรับเสด็จต่างเปียกปอนกันหมด แต่ก็ยังตั้งแถวเป็นระเบียบเรียบร้อยอยู่อย่างนั้น
เมื่อพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวเสด็จลงมาจากเฮลิคอปเตอร์ นายตำรวจราชองค์รักษ์ที่ตามเสด็จได้เข้าไปกางร่มถวาย ทรงทอดพระเนตรเห็นบรรดาข้าราชการและราษฎรที่มายืนตั้งแถวรอรับเสด็จอยู่ต่างก็เปียกฝนโดยทั่วกัน “จึงมีรับสั่งให้นายตำรวจราชองครักษ์เก็บร่ม แล้วทรงพระดำเนินเยี่ยมข้าราชการและราษฎรที่เข้าแถวรอรับเสด็จ โดยทรงเปียกฝนเช่นเดียวกับข้าราชการ และราษฎรทั้งหลายที่ยืนรอรับเสด็จในขณะนั้น”
Keep the Umbrella
Every time His Majesty made a visit at any place, no matter how hot the sun was or how strong wind blew, the villagers had never given up their intention or lost their patience to wait for His Majesty to come. Even when it rained heavily, no one wanted to go home. An article by Capt. Sriratna Hariruks, “His Majesty’s Powerful Charisma at Tha Yang”, in the book entitled, “72 Years of the Great Political Scientist Monarch”, tells a brief but wonderful story that once at the Huay Sut Yai Project it was raining quite heavily when His Majesty’s helicopter arrived. The local government officials and villagers, who lined up to welcome His Majesty were all soaking wet but stood orderly in their lines.
As His Majesty stepped down from the helicopter, one of His Majesty’s aides-de-camp from the Palace Police Unit stepped up to His Majesty with an umbrella to protect His Majesty from being wet by the rain. His Majesty, seeing all local officials and villagers standing firmly in their lines, all of them being soaking wet in the rain, told the Aide-de-camp to keep the umbrella and walked in the rain to greet the officials and villagers closely and got soaking wet the same with all of them.”
“สิ่งที่ทรงหวัง”
ครั้งหนึ่งขณะเสด็จฯ เยี่ยมเยียนราษฎรในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ผู้สื่อข่าวต่างประเทศคนหนึ่งได้ขอพระราชทานสัมภาษณ์ และได้กราบบังคมทูลถามว่า การที่เสด็จฯ เยี่ยมราษฎรและมีโครงการตามพระราชดำริเกิดขึ้นมากมายนั้นทรงหวังว่าจะให้คอมมิวนิสต์น้อยลงใช่หรือไม่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงรับสั่งตอบว่า “มิได้ทรงสนพระทัยว่าคอมมิวนิสต์จะน้อยลงหรือไม่ แต่ทรงสนพระทัยว่าประชาชนของพระองค์จะหิวน้อยลงหรือไม่”
The Thing His Majesty Hoped For
During His Majesty’s visit to a village in the communist-infested northeast region one day, a foreign correspondent asked for an interview with His Majesty and got it. One of his questions was that the many visits at various villages in remote areas where lots of royal projects were created, whether or not were due to His Majesty’s hope for the lessening of communist activities. His Majesty said, “I’m not interested in the lessening of communist activities, but I’m really interested in whether the villagers are less hungry.”

โดยเฉพาะช่วงก่อนสร้างพระราชตำหนักทักษิณราชนิเวศน์นั้น เป็นที่รู้กันว่าจังหวัดนราธิวาสชุกชุมไปด้วยโจรร้าย โจรปล้นสะดมและพวกโจรเรียกค่าไถ่ ถึงขนาดที่ในหลาย ๆ หมู่บ้านนั้น แม้แต่เจ้าหน้าที่ของรัฐก็ไม่กล้าย่างกรายเข้าไปทว่าพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงตระหนักในทุกข์อันลึกล้ำของชาวบ้านที่ทั้งทุกข์เพราะยากจนและทุกข์เพราะภัยคุกคาม จึงได้เสด็จฯ ลงไปเยี่ยมเยียนเป็นขวัญกำลังใจให้ราษฎรของพระองค์โดยไม่ทรงหวาดหวั่น บางวันถึงกับเสด็จฯ เป็นการส่วนพระองค์โดยปราศจากกำลังอารักขา และบางหมู่บ้านตำรวจเพิ่งถูกคนร้ายแย่งปืนแล้วยิงตายก่อนเสด็จไปถึงเพียงไม่กี่ชั่วโมงทรงรักราษฎรถึงเพียงนี้ จึงไม่แปลกที่หญิงชราคนหนึ่งในหมู่บ้านหนึ่งของอำเภอรือเสาะจะ ..”เข้ามาเกาะพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวร้องไห้แล้วบอกว่า ไม่นึกเลยว่าพระเจ้าอยู่หัวเป็นคนไทยชาวพุทธ จะมารักมุสลิมได้ถึงขนาดนี้”…
บทความเดียวกันได้เปิดเผยต่อไปอีกว่า ที่อีกหมู่บ้านหนึ่งในอำเภอเดียวกันนั้น “โต๊ะครูได้พาพรรคพวกมายืนรอรับเสด็จแล้วพูดขึ้นว่า ..รายอกลับไปเถอะ ประไหมสุหรีกลับไปเถิด ประเดี๋ยวพวกโจรจะลงจากเขา…”
และเมื่อถึงเวลาเสด็จฯ กลับที่มืดสนิทอย่างน่ากลัว โต๊ะครูกับชาวบ้านก็พากันมาจุดเทียนส่งเสด็จตลอด

So Much Love and the Candle-lit Farewell
An article published in a special edition of To the Future Magazine on His Majesty’s annual birthday celebration, entitled, The Peaceful Land at Narathivas, gives several accounts of difficulty during His Majesty’s visits at various villages in the Far South several years back before the construction of the Thaksin Rajanives Royal Residence in Narathivas, a coastal province on the South China Sea that is close to Malaysia.
It was known that Narathivas was infested with bandits, robbers and kidnappers. In some areas, even the state officials did not dare to go into. But his Majesty, with a lot of concern in his mind over the depth of suffering the villagers had faced. They suffered not only from their poverty but also from many threats that put their lives in danger.
Realizing that it was important and necessary to make royal visits to give the villagers moral support, His Majesty had no concern at all over his personal safety. There were times that His Majesty went out alone without a security unit. In one case, a policeman at a village where His Majesty made a visit was killed by a terrorist with a gun stolen from him just a few hours before His Majesty reached the village.
This shows that His Majesty has given so much love to the local southerners. It’s a touching scene when an old Muslim woman at a village in Rue Soeh District…”walked up to His Majesty and sat down to touch His Majesty’s feet, crying and said, ”I’d never thought that the King as a Buddhist Thai would have so much love for the Muslim people like us…”
The same article gave another account at a village in the same district, where the local Islam teachers at the village got together to wait for His Majesty to arrive. When His majesty’s car in the convoy stopped, a senior religious teacher, or Toh Kru, came up to Their Majesties and said, “Raya, please go back. Pramaisuri, please go back. The bandits would come down from the mountain very shortly from now…”
When it was time for Their Majesties to leave the village, it was already at night, so fearfully dark. Impressively, all the local religious teachers and villagers lined up with candles glowing in their hands along the dangerous village road that cuts through the rubber plantations. It was a marvelous send-off for the Royal Couple out of their deep concern on the safety of their Raya
“สามร้อยตุ่ม”
มีหลายหนที่ทรงงานติดพันจนมืดสนิท ท่ามกลางฝูงยุงที่รุมตอมเข้ามากัดบริเวณพระวรกาย รอบพระศอ พระกร พระพักตร์ รวมทั้งแมลงต่าง ๆ ที่เข้ามารุมรบกวนพระองค์ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวจะยังทรงทอด พระเนตร แผนที่อยู่ภายใต้แสงไฟฉายที่มีผู้ส่องถวายอย่างไม่สะดุ้งสะเทือน อย่างมากที่ทรงทำคือโบกพระหัตถ์ปัดไล่เบา ๆ เท่านั้น
ครั้งหนึ่งทรงมีรับสั่งเล่าเรื่อง “ยุง” ด้วยพระอารมณ์ขันว่า
“..ที่บางจาก แต่ไม่มีจากหรอกนะ ยุงชุมมากเลย ไปยืนดูแผนที่ เลยโดนยุงรุมกัดขาทั้งสองข้าง กลับมาขา
บวมแดง ไปสกลนครกลับมาแล้วถึงได้ยุบลง มองเห็นเป็นตุ่มแดง ลองนับดูได้ข้างละร้อยห้าสิบตุ่ม สองข้าง รวมสามร้อยพอดี..”
300 Bite Marks
There were many times that His Majesty was concentrating on what he’s doing until nightfall. Hundreds of mosquitoes swarmed around and attacked His Majesty around the face, the neck and hands, where there were not covered by clothing. There were also other night-time insects around him. His Majesty continued to look at the map in his hands made visible by flashlights, almost unconcerned of the mosquito bites. The best he did was to use his hand to swipe them off.
His Majesty once talked about the mosquito bites in a humorous mood. “…At Bang Chak (a location just a few miles outside Bangkok toward Samutprakarn Province on Sukhumvit Road, where Bang Chak Petroluem Refinery is now located, a damp and notorious place infested with large-sized mosquitoes about 3 times larger that the mosquitoes we see in Bangkok), where we find no “chak” but lots of mosquitoes. While looking at a map, I was attacked by mosquitoes on both of my legs. On the way back, both legs of mine looked swollen. After coming back from Sakolnakorn (a northeastern province), the legs looked better, the swollen almost gone but there were a lot of mosquito red bite marks. I counted them all and found that each leg got 150 bite marks. That’s a total of 300 mosquito bite marks.
Note: Chak (จาก) is the local name of Nipa palm. The botanical name is Nypa fruticans Wurmb. Thai people use the leaves of the palm for roofing in the countryside
You can easily find a delicious sweet called Khanom Chak in Samutprakarn. It is made from glutineous rice flour mixed with shredded coconut and coconut milk covered by Chak leave and grilled until done.

“น้ำท่วมครั้งนั้น”
วันที่ 7 พ.ย. 26 ขณะที่ชาวกรุงเทพมหานครส่วนหนึ่งกำลังทนทุกข์หนักกับสภาพน้ำท่วมขัง น้อยคนที่จะรู้ว่า พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวกำลังทรงพยายามหาหนทางบรรเทาทุกข์ให้พวกเขาอยู่อย่าง เงียบ ๆ วันนั้นรถพระที่นั่งแวนแวคคอนเนียร์ แล่นออกจากพระตำหนักจิตรลดารโหฐานราวบ่ายสอง
โมงเศษ สู่ถนนศรีอยุธยาเลี้ยวขวาเข้าถนนเพชรบุรี มุ่งสู่ถนนบางนาตราดไม่มีหมายกำหนดการ ไม่มีการปิดถนน แม้แต่ตำรวจท้องที่ก็ไม่ทราบล่วงหน้า
รถยนต์พระที่นั่งชะลอเป็นระยะ ๆ เพื่อทรงตรวจดูระดับน้ำ จนเมื่อถึงคอสะพานสร้างใหม่ที่คลองลาดกระบัง จึงเสด็จลงจากรถยนต์พระที่นั่งเพื่อทรงหารือกับเจ้าหน้าที่ที่ตามเสด็จทรงฉายภาพด้วยพระองค์เอง ทรงกางแผนที่ทอดพระเนตรจุดต่าง ๆ จนถึงเวลาบ่ายคล้อย รถยนต์พระที่นั่งจึงแล่นกลับ เมื่อถึงสะพานคลองหนองบอน รถพระที่นั่งหยุดเพื่อให้พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงฉายภาพบริเวณน้ำท่วมและทรงศึกษาแผนที่ร่องน้ำอีกครั้ง ปรากฏว่าชาวบ้านทราบข่าวว่า “ในหลวงมาดูน้ำท่วม” ต่างก็พากันมาชมพระบารมีนับร้อย ๆ คน จนทำให้การจราจรบน สะพานเกิดการติดขัด พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวต้องทรงโบกพระหัตถ์ให้รถขบวนเสด็จผ่านไปจนเป็นที่ เรียบร้อยด้วยพระองค์เอง
เย็นย่ำแล้วแต่ขบวนรถยนต์พระที่นั่งยังไม่หมดภารกิจ เมื่อรถวิ่งกลับมาทางถนนพัฒนาการ ทรงแวะฉายภาพบริเวณคลองตัน ทอดพระเนตรระดับน้ำแล้วทรงวกกลับมาที่คลองจิก เวลานั้นฟ้ามืดแล้วเพราะเป็นเวลาจวนค่ำ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวจึงทรงนำไฟฉายส่วนพระองค์ออกมาส่องแผนที่ป้องกันน้ำท่วมและแนวพนังกั้นน้ำอยู่เป็นเวลานานกลายเป็นอีกภาพหนึ่งที่สร้างความตื้นตันใจแก่ประชาชนชาวกรุงเทพฯ อย่างยิ่งประชาชนคนหนึ่งในละแวกเคหะนคร 1 แขวงบางบอน เขตประเวศ บอกว่า “รู้สึกซาบซึ้งในพระมหากรุณาธิคุณเป็นล้นพ้นที่ทรงห่วงใยทุกข์ของราษฎร เสด็จฯ มาแก้ไขปัญหาน้ำท่วมด้วยพระองค์เอง พวกเราถึงจะทนทุกข์เพราะน้ำท่วมขังเน่ามาเป็นเวลานานก็เชื่อมั่นว่าพระองค์ทรงช่วยพวกเราได้อย่างแน่นอน”
The Big Flood in Bangkok

On Nov. 7, back in1983 when the biggest flood in 43 years brought the people in Bangkok the misery of flooding for about two months as the water had no way to drain out. They didn’t know that His Majesty had been quietly trying very hard to help them. That day a Jeep Wagoneer station wagon moved out from Chitra Lada Palce at around 2.00pm with His Majesty sitting inside, The car headed for Ayutthya Rd. and Petchburi Rd. for a final destination on the Bangna-Trad Highway on the east side of Bangkok.
The car moved along the flooded roads without any sort of advance announcement from the Royal Palace. The traffic police did not receive any information on the royal outing.
The unmarked station wagon stopped from time to time on the way for His Majesty to check the water level. When the station wagon reached the new bridge over Lad Krabung Canal, His Majesty stepped out of the wagon to take photos of the flooding on the spot. His Majesty stayed there to study the maps of the location until late in the afternoon before getting into the palace vehicle and head back to inner Bangkok. At the bridge over Nong Bon canal, the vehicle stopped again for His Majesty to get down and take more photos of the flooded area. The local people got the news of the royal visit at their low-lying and heavily flooded area. Hundreds of them got out of their homes to see His Majesty at a close range. The traffic became congested on the bridge. His Majesty stood on the bridge to make hand signals for the royal convoy to clear the bridge.
Confidence
It was late in the afternoon but the royal convoy did not yet finish the flooding survey. On Pattanakarn Rd, toward Klong Ton intersection, His Majesty took the photos of the flood on the road again and turned toward Jig Canal. The sky started to darken as twilight was approaching. Over the bridge, His Majesty got out of the wagon with maps and a flashlight and looked at the maps of the line of the flooding barriers for a long time.
It was the scene that greatly impressed the people living around there. A resident of Keha Nakorn Housing Estate said, “I highly appreciate His Majesty’s kindness and care graciously given to the people by coming by himself to see the flooding situation and trying to find the solution. We may have been living with the flood for some time already but we are confident that His Majesty would be able to help us at last.
“ฉันทนได้”
ในเดือนหนึ่งของปี 2528 พระทนต์องค์หนึ่งของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวหักเฉียดโพรงประสาทฟัน พระทนต์องค์นั้นต้องการการถวายการรักษาเร่งด่วน แต่ขณะนั้นกรุงเทพฯ ก็กำลังประสบปัญหาอุทกภัย ต้องการการบรรเทาทุกข์เร่งด่วนเช่นกันเมื่อทันตแพทย์เข้ามาถวายการรักษา พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวรับสั่งถามว่า “จะใช้เวลานานเท่าใด” ทันตแพทย์กราบบังคมทูลว่า อาจต้องใช้เวลา 1-2 ชม. พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวรับสั่งว่า”ขอรอไว้ก่อนนะ ฉันทนได้ วันนี้ขอไปดูราษฎรและช่วยแก้ไขปัญหาเรื่องน้ำท่วมก่อน”
I can stand it
In 1985, a tooth of His Majesty the King was broken close to the tooth nerves in the tooth canal. It needed immediate treatment but Bangkok at the time was heavily flooded and became a devastating natural disaster for the people in Bangkok. The flood problem also needed urgent treatment to relieve the badly effected people. When His Majesty’s dentist arrived at the palace to start the dental treatment, His Majesty asked the dentist how long it would take. The dentist said it may take about 1-2 hours. His Majesty then said, “Let’s wait for a while. I can stand it. I have to go out to see the flood and help solving the people’s flooding problem.”
“ทุกข์บรรเทา”
การ “ประทับอยู่ในบ้านเมือง” ดังพระราชดำรัสนั้น ในเวลาต่อมาก็เป็นที่รู้กันว่ามิได้หมายถึงการประทับอยู่ในเมืองหลวงเท่านั้น แต่ยังเสด็จฯ เยี่ยมเยียนราษฎรของพระองค์จนแทบจะทั่วทุกตารางนิ้วที่พระบาทจะย่างไปถึงได้ ทรงวิทย์ แก้วศรี ผู้เรียบเรียงบทความ “บรมบพิตรพระราชสมภารเจ้าผู้ทรงพระคุณธรรมอันประเสริฐ” บันทึกไว้ว่า วันที่ 13 ก.ย 2497 ขณะที่ทรงมีพระชนมายุ 26 พรรษา และทรงครองราชย์เป็นปีที่ 8 ปรากฏว่าเกิดเหตุการณ์อัคคีภัยครั้งร้ายแรงขึ้นที่อำเภอบ้านโป่ง จ.ราชบุรี
พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวจึงเสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปเยี่ยมเยือนราษฎรขาวบ้านโป่งผู้ประสบภัยในพื้นที่ ทรงทอดพระเนตรบริเวณที่เกิดเพลิงไหม้และพระราชทานสิ่งของบรรเทาทุกข์ทุกข์ในยามยากเพราะสิ้นเนื้อประดาตัวจากภัยเพลิงนั้นมากล้น แต่ เมื่อได้รู้ว่ายังมีใครสักคนคอยเป็นกำลังใจ ทุกข์สาหัสแค่ไหนก็ยังพอมีแรงกายลุกขึ้นสู้ต่อได้ การเสด็จพระราชดำเนินเยี่ยมเยียนราษฎรผู้ประสบภัยในครั้งนั้น นับได้ว่าเป็นการเสด็จพระราชดำเนินเยี่ยมราษฎรต่างจังหวัดเป็นครั้งแรกในรัชกาล
The Relief
The meaning of His Majesty’s language such as “staying in the country” took some time before being understood by the palace officials that it does not mean “staying in the royal residence in Bangkok” but it means any place in this country where His Majesty can set foot in, no matter how remote. Songvit Keosri, in his article, “The Great King of Excellent Dharma Principles”, wrote that on Sept 13, 1954 at the age of 26 and in the 8th year of the reign, there was a fire with a devastating effect at Amphoe Ban Pong, a large and well-populated district in Rajburi Province.
His Majesty decided to visit the place to see how bad the fire effected Ban Pong people. His Majesty took time to see the whole area ravaged by the fire and handed out a variety of relief items to fire victims. Most of the fire victims had lost all of their homes and personal belongings of every kind and become losers of all their homes and properties. But His Majesty’s care for the people who suffered disastrous effects of the fire seemed to be a great relief on their sufferings. It’s also an encouragement for them to get up and move on with their lives. His Majesty’s visit to Ban Pong District to conduct the public relief activity from the royal palace himself at that time was the first up-country trip in His Majesty’s Reign.
“พระมหากษัตริย์”
เมื่อมีผู้สื่อข่าว BBC ขอพระราชทานสัมภาษณ์เพื่อประกอบภาพยนตร์เรื่อง The Soul of Nation ในปี 2522 โดยได้กราบบังคมทูลถามถึงพระราชทัศนะเกี่ยวกับบทบาทหน้าที่ของพระมหากษัตริย์ไทย พระองค์ได้พระราชทานคำตอบว่า”การที่จะอธิบายว่า พระมหากษัตริย์ คืออะไรนั้น ดูเป็นปัญหาที่ยากพอสมควร โดยเฉพาะในกรณีของข้าพเจ้า ซึ่งถูกเรียกโดยคนทั่วไปว่า พระมหากษัตริย์ แต่โดยหน้าที่ที่แท้จริงแล้ว ดูจะห่างไกลจากหน้าที่ที่พระมหากษัตริย์ที่เคยรู้จักหรือเข้าใจกันมาแต่ก่อน หน้าที่ของข้าพเจ้าในปัจจุบันนั้น ก็คือทำอะไรก็ตามที่เป็นประโยชน์ ถ้าถามว่า ข้าพเจ้ามีแผนการอะไรบ้าง ในอนาคต คำตอบก็คือไม่มี เราไม่ทราบว่าอะไรจะเกิดขึ้นในภายภาคหน้า แต่ไม่ว่าอะไรจะเกิดขึ้นก็ตาม เราก็จะเลือกทำแต่สิ่งที่เป็นประโยชน์ ซึ่งนั่นเป็นสิ่งที่เพียงพอแล้วสำหรับเรา”
The Monarch
When a BBC correspondent received his permission for an interview with His Majesty for its TV documentary show, The Soul of Nation, in 1979, he asked His Majesty for a view on the role as the Thai Monarch, His Majesty said,
“To explain the meaning of the term “monarch” seems to be a question quite difficult to answer, especially, in my own case as I’m being known generally as the MONARCH. In fact, my role is far from being a duty of a monarch
as generally understood before. My present duty is to do whatever useful. If asked how many plans I have for the future. My answer is I have no plan. We don’t know what will happen in the future. But no matter what would happen, I will choose to do only useful things, which I think that’s good enough for me.”
