All the gardens inside Government House compound were damaged during the anti-government People’s Alliance for Democracy’s four-month occupation and will cost Bt20 million to restore, according to the Place and Security’s director, Pongsak Siriwong.

“We found that gardens and other facilities such as water sprinklers, electricity cables and spotlights were damaged, so we will need Bt20 million to restore the 10,000 square meters area. The work will take a month,” he said

Pongsak was speaking after checking damage with other independent agencies after the PAD’s core leaders opened the doors of Government House and allowed the team to examine areas such as the Thai Khufa and Santi Maitri buildings, the most important structures inside the Government House compound.

The investigation team consisted of representatives from the Secretariat of the Prime Minister’s Bureau, the Senate, the People’s Network for Election in Thailand, Office of the Auditor of Thailand, and Chulalongkorn University’s Social Research Institute.

Pongsak said the investigation team found no items had been moved or lost from the Thai Khufa and Santi Maitri buildings, in particular some white ivory from the Prime Minister’s chamber and precious souvenirs received from world leaders, such as the US president and his wife, First Lady Laura Bush.

The investigation team has not found much damage in these buildings, except for some dog droppings on the valuable carpet in the meeting room of Santi Maitri, he added.

The team will spend a week continuing to examine all areas inside Government House to evaluate the cost of damage.

PAD’s core leader Suriyasai Katasila said PAD will today return Government House to the Secretariat of the Prime Minister’s Bureau at midday. All tents, sandbags, tyres, and other facilities will moved from the area, he added, asking police to secure the compound during the night.

On the question of compensation for damages during the occupation,Suriyasai said PAD’s lawyer would negotiate with the Secretariat of the Prime Minister’s Bureau. PAD, he said, should neither be fined nor punished under civil or criminal law because the demonstration against the government was a political situation.
